The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control is committed to a comprehensive investigation of the troubling allegations aired last night in a KCBS/KCAL special report.
The alleged actions of Animal Control officers shown in the report do not in any way represent the values of the County of Los Angeles, this department, or the more than 400 dedicated employees of the Department of Animal Care and Control who are committed to providing essential services to county residents.
In the wake of these allegations, the department has taken immediate steps, including notification to the Auditor-Controller to launch a comprehensive investigation. The department is committed to enacting every corrective step necessary after the investigation is completed.
In addition, we have put a series of preventative measures in place. We have retrained all employees in the Field Enforcement (animal licensing) unit on policies and procedures; we have implemented a system to require supervisors to document their field audits of employees and increased the frequency of those audits; and we have changed that audit system to include reporting to higher level management. In addition, we plan to issue GPS-equipped vehicles to this work unit for the use of employees conducting business in the community.
We value our relationship with the communities we serve, and recognize the trust they place in us. Our aim is to deliver nothing short of excellent, caring service.
