The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) employs sworn animal control officers who work to promote and protect public and animal safety. Our animal control officers answer requests for service and patrol neighborhoods 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Dispatched and monitored via the Department’s Communications Centers, DACC’s robust and professional team of animal control officers handle a myriad of field services calls each day. The following are the most common field service duties of your animal control officer team:

Animal Control Officer Duties:

  • Protecting communities from dangerous animals
  • Rescuing sick or injured animals
  • Capturing stray dogs to help reunite them with their families
  • Investigating complaints of animal cruelty, abuse, neglect, and illegal animal fighting
  • Assisting city and county agencies
  • Assisting local law enforcement
  • Removing deceased animals from public areas
  • Enforcing local and state animal ordinances and laws
  • Inspecting and grading animal facilities and businesses such as boarding kennels, grooming businesses, and pet stores
  • Responding to emergency calls such as evacuating animals during wildfires or other natural disasters
  • Reporting suspected cases of abuse towards children, elders, or dependent adults
